Exhibition catalog for SENZA ARMATURA or extinction (2024), a retrospective of Matthew Schlueb’s practice in residential architecture, exploring the numbing nature of insideness and his proposal for a symbiotic somatosensory architecture of the skin, withoutdoors.
excerpt:
Architects struggle in the weeds of armatures and buttresses.
Whereas, it is a matter of existence, if not persistence, defying entropy,
of intimacy in taste, talent, and tensiles.
Architecture is not frozen music. It is living.
We may desire permanence; however, life is temporal, a state of becoming, something other than fixed.
Our defiance of this point, created the greatest crisis in architecture, if not our existence as a species.
We have gone too far, prospered too much. Settlement is metropolis, humility is hubris.
Domesticating the wilderness, we laid to rest, what has always been flowing.
Most take shelter against the storm.
Few have urgency to live in the current, sense the sacred sensual, drift in the tides, without vessel.
Stand firm – hold fast.
In the raging tempest, senza armatura.
