Gaudí’s Influence on Contemporary Architecture – Trencadís Mosaic

2020.05.21 – Lecture 1

An examination of Antoni Gaudí’s repurposing of discarded materials in the creation of trencadís mosaics for the parabolic form of rooftop lanterns and ventilators on the Güell Estate Pavilions and Dragon Gate, Casa Vicens and the Park Güell serpentine bench. This innovation is compared with the contemporary works of Agbar Tower by Jean Nouvel in Barcelona and the Bilbao Metro Station by Norman Foster. Virgil Cantini’s mosaics and Ned Kahn’s creative cladding of the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh are discussed as local examples.
