Gaudí’s Influence on Contemporary Architecture – Estereostàtic

An examination of Antoni Gaudí’s study of equilibrated structure in the inclined props and catenary curves of the Colonia Güell Church stereo-static model, beginning in 1898, the Park Güell colonnade viaduct and the Sagrada Familia bell towers. His experimentations will be compared with Santiago Calatrava’s contemporary works Pasarela Zubizuri and the Bilbao Airport, as well as Diagonal ZeroZero by Enric Massip-Bosch in Barcelona. The Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Traces of Memory installation at the Mattress Factory on Pittsburgh’s North Side will be discussed as local examples.
